Save defence establishments, Mr. Parrikar

Save Defence establishments, Mr. parrikar.
=================================

Dear Mr. Parrikar, it is agonizing, to say the least, reading about the major fire that took place in the middle of the night, in Pulegaon, Maharashtra yesterday. Even before the raging fires could be doused, the cannons have already let loose on Modi, and the inability of this government to stop avert this disaster.

People conveniently forget that there have been a heap of similar incidents in the recent past , in our very own India.

Bharatpur depot in 2000
Pathankot depot in 2001
Jodhpur Depot in 2001
Kashmir ( I don't remember where) - 2007
And now, Pulgaon in 2005, and again in 2016

Without getting into politics, let me state categorically. I am NOT one of those who believe that callousness could have caused so many incidents. in a trot. I refuse to believe that negligence could have caused these accidents, on an incident-to-incident basis. I am sure that being army establishments, a thorough investigation would have been conducted in each of these locations after the incident. And whether it was indeed negligence, or sabotage or any other reason, I refuse to believe that the governments , this, or the previous ones, were dumb enough to release the findings in public domain. Defence 101 would dictate that the establishment quietly plugs any loopholes that may have found, without any drumbeats in the media.

Therefore, I find it very amusing, to say the least, that the so-called "experts" pronounce THIS government guilty of negligence. When this has happened so frequently in the past as well. When all "preventive measures" taken then have yielded nothing incremental, practically, going by the alarming regularity of such incidents. Nothing is more evident than the bias of the media against this government. And I choose to ignore it.

And yet, Mr. Parrikar, as a common citizen, I am distraught at such news. Not just for the loss of lives and property that such incidents cause. But from the larger issue of the nation's security. Let me explain why.

If these are caused by the so-called negligence of the defence establishment, then it is a shocker for any Indian. Because, it then becomes very evident that even small disturbances, knowingly or unknowingly, can cause a good portion of the country's ammunition to be destroyed. Imagine if this were to happen during war time. Where will we go for ammunition to defend the borders?

If these were sabotages, then it uncovers porosity in our defence posture, which can very easily be exploited by the enemy.

Either way, for an emerging superpower in the world horizon, this, to me, clearly is a chink in our armoury - quite literally.  And needs to be fixed on the cliched war-footing basis.

Sir, you have started saving the country billions of dollars, through renegotiation of defence contracts and through other programs like "Make in India". The results will be there to see, for all, over the years. But I would rather that you spend the money thus saved, in fortifying security of our defence establishments. I would rather that you give a strong message to the enemy that India is strong enough to protect it's borders, as well it's establishments that provide that protective cover - Pulgoan, Pathankot et al.

Let the fire be doused for good. Let any future fire be opened only in the borders - at the enemy.

A tale of two Vainikas

For long, the Saraswati Veena has been regarded as the epitome of classical music rendition. Generation after generation, the veena was the rock-bed of rendering classical instrumental music. Many generations of vainikas ( veena players) have come and gone. Some of them, like Dhanammal, Kuppayyar, Sambasivayyar etc. have graced the horizon in the recent past, in a long ancestry of Vainikas dotted by the likes of Sage Agasthiya and the redoubtable Ravana.

As a child, I have been fortunate to listen live, many a time, to two of the most accomplished Vainikas the last couple of centuries has seen. I am talking about S Balachander (SB) and Chittibabu (CB). This article aims to be a study in contrast, of these maestros, and hopes to bring out the varied persona of both, but nevertheless producing incomparable music, in the process.

Firstly - both veena players were, undoubtedly considered the best in breed, of their times. Both came from humble backgrounds. One from the city of Chennai (SB) and the other from a relatively obscure Kakinada ( CB). Both dabbled in the film industry too, at a time when films as a medium of entertainment was just taking off. While SB front-ended his ventures by acting, directing and setting music, CB was largely content with scoring background music. Both had, and continue to have, followers the world over. Both were contemporaries, roughly speaking.

But perhaps there end the comparisons.

Chittibabu was lucky to have a guru to die for - the venerable Emani Sankara Sastry. Under his tutelage,  Chittibabu blossomed into one of the most vibrant and classical exponents of the veena, and had soon overtaken his illustrious guru in the popularity charts, because of his sheer genius on the instrument. Initially he stuck to the Sastry baani ( style) of rendition, but his sheer genius could not be contained, and soon enough, he had evolved into hsi own distinctive style. I remember many of his concerts, as a child, in Madurai. I would characterize his playing more as a dance ( of the fingers) over the frets, than music itself. To me, he was the first ever musician, who demonstrated that it is possible, and even necessary, to break the barriers created by performers, in the name of Sampradaya ( tradition), and test the boundaries of music. He showed, time and again, how it is possible, with such a mastery over the instrument, it is easily possible to push the realms of music into unknown territories, and take the listener to a an altogether new experience, every time he played. Just a sampler- listen to his 5-minute " Ninnu Vina" in Navarasa Kanada . Dont simply get blown away by the sheer speed of his rendition. Observe closely, and you will find that he does not even compromise a single gamakam even at that speed. Perfectly grammatical rendition at bullet-train velocity.  I am yet to listen to anyone else render that particular song any better, till date. If I were to compare him with anyone from outside the world os music, it would be Roger Federer. Chittibabu, much like Federer, was poetry in motion. Absolute command over the instrument to be able to produce stunning notes. Super-human imagination , reflective of once-in-a-generation performer. And the sheer grace, agility and sagacity in delivery. Indeed a rare combination. Such genius is hard to come by.

S Balachander, in total contrast, was a swayambu .  He did not have any worthwhile guru, and had dabbled in a variety of instruments like the Kanjira, and a heap of Hindustani instruments like the tabla, harmonium, dilruba and even the shehnai and sitar, before he had set his eyes on the veena. He passion for the veena led him on a hot pursuit to master it, and lo! He took all of two years to give his first performance. He turned the "disadvantage" of lack of a proper guru, to his advantage, by straightaway evolving his own style of rendition, which is hard to replicate, given the complexity and dexterity he used to bring in at the same time. In the field of music, he was indeed a controversial figure. The so-called purists of the Madras music circuit were quite often heard scoffing at him for "moving away from sampradaya" . Such was the level of imagination and innovation he brought in.  His treatise on the 72 Melakarta Ragas, is a collector's delight. 12 LPs in all. A rare gem. He spends about 20 minutes for each ragam, and expounds so beautifully, the Ragalakshanam of each ragam by way of Alapana and Thaanam... no one has ever done this before. No one look likely to repeat it in the near future, either. His deep knowledge of Hindustani music allowed him to bring in "phrases" that were hitherto unheard of in Carnatic music, without sacrificing any of the syntax that goes with classical music. The rasikas were mesmerized and petrified, at the same time! I, needless to say, belonged to the former category. But one fact remained right till his very last - his sheer mastery over the instrument and his ability to push the realms of music beyond the unimaginable.

There were eminent vainikas before - Emani Sankara Sastry, Doraiswamy Iyyangar, just to name two. There are many, who followed them - Rajesh Vaidya (CB's disciple) , E Gayatri and Jayanti Kumaresh, just to name a few. But, in my eyes, with due to respect to all these mentioned, while they were or are very good in their own ways, the duo of Chittibabu and Balachander, are simply a class apart. It is like saying there were excellent cricketers in our era, and then there was Sachin. I hope you get the drift.

The sheer genius of their renditions is being missed by many rasikas of the veena, like me, simply because these were two of once-in a century performers.

Recipe for anti-toxin juice for cancer patients

The following are the key ingredients:

Carrot - 3
Beetroot - 1
Cucumber - 1, Celery ( if available)
Bottle gourd - 1/3rd OR WHITE PUMPKIN  OR WATERMELON
Gooseberry - 6
Pomogranate - 1  ( just peel the outer, and add the entire balance in)
Apple - 1
Orange - 1 ( Can be substuted with Mosambi if available)
Lemon - 2
Turmeric fresh - 1 inch
Ginger - 1/2 inch
Berries - strawberry, blue berry, kiwi etc... whatever is available ( best source of anti-oxidant)

It is OK if you miss some of the ingredients, since not everything may be available in all places at all times. There are no side effects of missing out. But it is most effective if all ingredients are in.

Put all of these in a large slow juicer/ juicer/ blender ( more than one shot if required).  DO NOT ADD ANY WATER.

Juice it nicely, filter it. DO NOT REFRIGERATE. CONSUME WITHIN 1 HOUR. Ideally, it should give minimum five glasses of juice. Drink it, first thing in the morning, on empty stomach, at least one and half hours BEFORE any food or drink, for the anti-toxins to work. Be prepared to pass urine generously, after consumption

Best done, twice a day.  For the second helping, ingredients can be lesser, and. quantity can be lesser, too, to give about 3 glasses.

Should be consumed ideally upto at least one year after chemo is over. In fact, can be continued in perpetuity, to negate the effects of any oral medications too.

WARNING: For people with other specific ailments ( diabetes etc.) , please check with your dietician on what you need to remove from the list above, for some of these items may be high in sugar, and may not be advisable to one and all. Eg. beet sugar needs to be avoided by diabetics.
