வகுத்த நெறிதம் மகிழ்ந்திட்டால் - பாழ்
மதத்தால் வருமோ பயன் ?

அறிவுக்கு அப்பாலே ஆண்டவன் - அவனை
அறிவது பகுத்தலால் ஆகாது - எனவே
நெறியிற் கடந்து உணர்வோம் - அது
அறிவும் மதமும் அறியாதது.

A tale of two airlines

I have travelled quite a few times, by Indigo Airlines as well as Air Asia (Malaysia/ Singapore). Both are considered low cost airlines. No frills whatsoever.

Today's news on Indigo Airline making a profit of Rs.1,304 crores is endearing. Indigo joins Air Asia as one of the very few airlines globally to make a profit, in an industry that continues to evolve and struggles to get it's model right.

What makes these two airlines tick, amongst rubble of failed airlines, and bleeding ones? Set me thinking. I felt that a few factors, amongst others, could be working for them.

1) Aggressive pricing. Both have known to not shy away from pricing their seats aggressively, and focus on capacity utilization.

2) Elaborate network of locations covered, and comprehensive schedules.

3) Before-time take-offs most of the time. ( This has been my personal experience, others may disagree). This saves a ton on taxiing and bay charges at the airport.

4) More efficient routing, and maniacal focus on maintenance- resulting in no to low accidents thus far.

Many CEOs of airlines across the globe bemoan the high costs of operation, and the high fuel costs for their woes. Indigo and Air Asia, along with a couple in Europe ( Ryan Air and Easy Jet) are standing examples of how to run an airline profitably, even in the current business environment.

Long haul flights ( trans-Pacific or trans-Atlantic) could be a different model altogether. But for the rest them all, these airlines clearly are showing the future of the airline industry.

Krishna in Pettai Tamizh

Teacher's Day (5thSep) in 2015 was also Janmashtami Day, the day Lord Krishna was born. I had penned two poems, one in English and one in Tamizh. They apear in separate posts.

I thought of a similar poem - this time in the voice of a pettai rowdy in a slum in Chennai.... here it goes

கிஸ்னா, நீ பேட்ட ரௌடியா , இல்லாங்காட்டி வாத்யாரா
=========================================

குஜ்லிங்க டிரஸ் எல்லாம் குளிக்கிரப்போ லவுட்ற
மெர்சல் ஆயி கத்தும்போ சிரிச்சுகினே குடுக்கற.

உசுருக்கு என்னிக்குமே ஒரு பீலிங்க்ஸ் இல்லன்னுட்டு 

அப்பீட் பண்ணி, பொறவால ரிப்பீட் ஆக்குற.

மண்ண துண்ணுபுட்டு நீயும் வூட்டுக்கு போனப்போ 

ஆத்தா படா பேஜாராயி  டப்பா லக்கிடி ஆடினப்போ 

வாய தொறந்து தில்லாலங்கடி வேலய காட்டிக்கின   
ஒலகத்தையே பயாஸ்கோப்ல  உடான்சு காட்டிக்கின.  

உரியில கீற வெண்ணை எல்லாம் லவட்டிகினு ஓடிகின 

தொரத்தி வந்த பொம்பளக்கு கில்மா ஒண்ணு குடுத்துகின 

சல்பேட்டா ஏத்திகினு மஜாவா இரு மச்சின்னு 

சாராய கட வாசல்ல சொண்டி கணக்கா பேசிக்கின.

வாத்யார்க்கு முன்னால மூடிக்கினு குந்திக்கின 

அவரு சொன்ன வேலையெல்லாம் பொத்திக்கினு செஞ்சுகின

முனியாண்டி மேட்டருக்கு முடிவு கட்டற சாக்குல 

குப்பத்துக்கே வஸ்தாது அப்டின்னு காட்டிக்கின. 

நைனா, இன்னிக்கி சரக்குல கிக் கம்மி போல -

ஒன்ன இன்னா சொல்றதுன்னு படா கன்பீசன்பா

பேட்டகே நீ வஸ்தாதா, தோஸ்த்துக்கெல்லாம் தோஸ்தா,

இல்லாங்காட்டி வாத்யராக்கு வாத்யாராவே  கீறியா?

நதியினிலே நீராடும் நந்தவன கோபியர்கள்

கதிகலங்க ஆடைகளைக் களவெடுத்து மறைத்தாய்

மான அவமானம் ஆத்மாவுக்கு இல்லையென்று 

போன போக்கிலே  பாடமாய் நீ  உறைத்தாய்.

கண்ட மண்னைத் தின்றுவிட்டு  யசோதைக்கு நீயோ   

உண்ட வாயை வாகையுடன்  திறக்கக் காட்டினாய்

அண்ட சராசரமும் அதனுள்ளே அடக்கினாய்

பிண்ட முள்ளேயே பிரம்மத்தை  தேடு என உரைத்தாய். 

உரி வெண்ணை திருடி நீ உரிமையுடன் தின்றாய்

பறி கொடுத்த கோபியர்க்கு இதழ்முத்தம் அளித்தாய்

கரிக் கண்ணா பார்முழுதும் ஆனந்தத் தாண்டவமாய்

சரி யான பாதையிலே போகும்படி போதித்தாய்.

குரு வான சாண்டிபணி முனிக்கு நீ அடங்கினாய்

மறு பேச்சு இல்லாமல் கட்டளைக ளேற்றாய்

குரு வாக அர்ச்சுனனை வழிகாட்டும் சாக்கிலே
தரு மதத்தை கீதைமூலம் தரணிக்குத்  தந்தாய்.

உனை இன்று எவ்வாறு போற்றிடுவேன் நானே

எனை நானே கேட்கின்ற கேள்வியிது நாதா.

மெய்ப் பொருள் விளக்கிடும் ஆசானாய் போற்றவா- இலை
உய் விக்கும்  கண்ணனாய்ச்  சேவித்து மகிழவா?

सुहाना सपना  समझकर तुम्हें भूल सख्ता हूँ - पर
दिल में जज़्बात का हंगामा हुआ तो मैं क्या करूँ

One Ode' to a teacher on Janmashtami

You stole the clothes
Of the Gopikas.
And taught us that
The Atman knows no shame.

You opened your mouth
Full of mud and laugh.
And taught us that
God is inside this frame.

You fooled around everywhere
Made the neighbour despair
And taught us that
Life is full of joy, be aware.

You were the obedient student
Under Sage Sandipani- and yet
And you taught us all,
Righteousness and morals many.

How shall I revere you today
What would be the best way?
As Krishna, the omnipresent- or
As the guru of all gurus?
